About the GNRT

The Guide to Network Resource Tools (GNRT) has been designed to provide a basic introduction to the Internet with sections on using basic tools and services available on the network. With this 4th edition it has definitely become a comprehensive guide on a whole spectrum of Internet services: from basic network tools and simple email and Web tools to multimedia collaboration tools. The GNRT also covers topics like searching for information, Web publishing and security. This edition, which is based on the previous editions of the GNRT, tries to improve some content, in the fields of streaming, videoconference and networking.

Who is responsible for the Guide

The GNRT is produced by TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association) for the user community of its member academic and research networks. Though primarily intended for Internet users and user support staff in this community, it is made freely available via the WWW to encourage and help Internet users everywhere. Background Information The GNRT was originally produced by EARN (European Academic and Research Network) as a small printed booklet and registered in the Internet Engineering Task Force's FYI series. During its history the guide became very well known and popular with end-users and support staff. In 1996 TERENA undertook a major update of the publication which resulted in a completely new version, written to include many new developments and a wide range of popular tasks and tools. In 2000, the second online edition of the guide was produced and simultaneously published as a traditional book "the Internet Users' Guide to Network Resource Tools by Addison-Wesley Longman. In 2001 the 3rd revised version was published on the Web. In 2002, the 3rd edition of a book version under the new title Internet Users' Reference - 2002 edition was published by Addison-Wesley. The latest fourth edition, currently only available on-line from the TERENA web site.
